Collaboration Is What Makes Development Fun

We started doing “agile” about 3 weeks ago.  Our planning meeting was 20 minutes then.  Our scrum master learned on day 1 of CSM class that he was doing some things wrong so today we have a half-day meeting to prioritize the backlog.  Another dev from the class and I are just about a week into this and it is great.  He is doing the Flex front end, I am writing the web services.  Collaboration is what makes development fun.  We’ve interacted more in a day than we would in weeks as maintenance devs.  Doing things in small pieces provides several “victories” per day.  I’ll check in some code and say “I have that service working.”  Ten minutes later “Come see how I’ve consumed it in Flex.”

When I first started as a developer 10 or 11 years ago we used to collaborate on everything from simple 10 line test apps to entire modules.  Around here, a lot of the little victories are showing another dev how you cleaned up 180 lines of legacy code and compressed it into 10 lines.  So getting back to collaboration has been awesome.  I had told my wife the line about how “alarm clocks are for people who don’t want to wake up.”  Today I was on my elliptical machine thinking about what I was going to do today and I somehow convinced myself that if I moved faster time would pass quicker and I could get to work sooner.
